Steps

  1. Gather all your ingredients.
  2. Cook sausage, ground beef, onion, and garlic in a Dutch oven over medium heat until well browned.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and water. Season with sugar, 2 tablespoons parsley, basil, 1 tsp salt, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and pepper. Simmer, covered, for about 1 ½ hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles 8–10 minutes, then drain and rinse with cold water.
  5. In a bowl, combine ricotta, egg, remaining 2 tablespoons parsley, and ½ tsp salt.
  6. Preheat the oven to 375 °F (190 °C).
  7. Assemble: spread 1½ cups meat sauce in a 9×13 in baking dish, layer 6 noodles, half the ricotta mixture, 1/3 of the mozzarella, 1½ cups meat sauce, and ¼ cup Parmesan. Repeat layers, finishing with mozzarella and Parmesan. Cover with foil (sprayed or not touching cheese).
  8. Bake 25 minutes, remove foil, then bake another 25 minutes.
  9. Rest 15 minutes before serving.
